marie khouri is the artist and creator of the sculptural planter collection. she received her fine arts training in paris from les ateliers du louvre before returning to vancouver, where, inspired by the natural beauty and vastness of western canada, her work expanded dramatically in both scale and ambition, reflecting a passion for innovation and spontaneity while marie's approach to form remains intuitive and contemporary, she draws inspiration from the raw materials in nature. cedar bows transfixed in bronze, lumbar vertebrae modeled into playful seats and silhouettes of doves gently perched in space her artwork is unconstrained, pushing the barriers of the medium where the surfaces reveal the entire process and the finished sculpture reveals the evolutionary method by which it was created
theconcept
originally created as a centerpiece for a garden installation, the concept for the sculptural planter collection evolved into a modern functional and decorative limited edition industrial art piece the sculpting process, that always begins with a lump of clay in the palm of her hands, produces the free flowing curves that take shape as each planter is turned degree by degree to achieve a unique and distinctive design from the clay maquettes, the full sized planters were meticulously sculpted by marie before going into limited commercial production, where each planter in the collection is restricted to limited editions of 321
thetechnology
engineered for both interior as well as exterior use the limited edition sculptural planter series is marie's first creation intended for industrial production, yet each planter in the series still conveys that definitive sense of atelier work constructed in rotational molded polyethylene the planter molds undergo a specialized and laborious finishing process resulting in perfectly smooth and custom enamel painted surfaces available in a wide range of colors despite a strong stylistic correspondence, each of the four limited edition sculptural planters varies greatly in size and volume, accommodating almost any space
